I have lived in the Phx area all my life and have never hiked in the McDowell Mtns until today. How do I find out about trails in the area? Also, we came across a fenced in cave/mine? What is this?
I knew of the area due to working on the design for the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead. This trailhead design is currently in review by the City of Scottsdale and should breakground within the year.
Until the trialhead is opened I would refer to the City of Scottsdale Parks and Recreation department for information. The Desert Mountain Community abuts the Preserve, and might also be a place to check for information.
As far as the fenced cave/mine; there are many such areas in the PHX area. Prospecting has always been popular in the mountains surrounding PHX. In fact I heard last week that the largest copper deposit in the state’s history was discovered in a protected area in what I thought was the Superstitions. I don’t know exactly. In general fenced areas should not be breached, lest you wish to get arrested by Officer Gosney.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
