Yes, yes, finally. The webpage has returned, I manage to (kinda) keep my word.
It’ll be a little while before I get everything running smoothly (along with a design that doesn’t suck), so bear with me here.
Here is what is in store in the near future:
- Photos: Yes, long awaited, they’ll finally come back, better than ever (by “ever” I mean “non-existant”)
- User Registration: Most content will not be visible unless you have been given an account and are logged in. My Beanie Baby fetish must remain secret.
- Non-Ugly Design: Something readable, perhaps.
Things are starting to look a little better around here. Design and readibility has improved from horrendous to ugly. I’ll fix that all later.
Astute readers may notice this page now sports login and password fields. Why is having an account cool?
- Private Content: Many posts are not visible unless you’re logged in; even if you’re logged in, some posts are still hidden from you as well (depending on how private the subject matter is). Some posts are only visible to me (only the funny ones).
- Non-Anonymous Comments: This isn’t really that cool.
- (Under Debate) Posting: Some users may be allowed to post links, etc
Email me and I will set you up with an account. If you don’t know my email, then you don’t deserve an account at this time (I’m still working out the kinks).
Coming soon:
- RSS/Atom feeds with comments: Because I would demand it from others
- Photos: I want to have these working before I leave for Portugal in two weeks
I ordered Samsung E105 from Amazon today (currently negative $100 after rebates). It should arrive within the week with a new service provider (T-Mobile); I will keep the same number. I don’t have the cables for transferring numbers from my phone book, so don’t be surprised if I don’t recognize phone numbers when called.
Many of you have had the misfortune of hearing me rant about my cell phone and service before, but I just love to hear myself talk (I read my writing aloud when lonely), so you’ll have to suffer through this rant once more.
My current (soon to be previous) phone was the Samsung n400. Some of my issues stemmed from the phone, while others were issues with Sprint; apparently, I’m willing to blame most of the issues on Sprint, considering I’ve gone and purchased another Samsung phone.
(To all those who couldn’t wait until I started a writing again, consider this entry proof of how uninteresting my life is)
I received my new phone yesterday. I called T-Mobile to set up the number transfer process (should be complete by the end of the week). They ended up giving me 6 months of free service and 100 extra minutes for my “troubles.”
What troubles, you ask? I’m not quite sure. T-Mobile originally gave me a temporary number in the 425 area code (the area code for Seattle’s eastern suburbs) instead of the 206 area code all the cool kids have. I called to correct this before switching my number, and commented that my new service was useless until the number transferred (I don’t think I even said it that strongly); the T-Mobile rep apologized profusely and gave me the free service (half of my 1-year contract).
I have yet to use their service, but I’m a T-Mobile fan already.
One thing I do miss about Sprint: My new phone’s clock isn’t automatically set; I assume this is the trade off for being able to tell time off-service.
Update 10/5: Turns out I get my “sixth month free,” not “six months free.”
I live 15 feet above Seattle’s First Avenue; my studio’s single-paned windows do not provide effective sound insulation. The downtown noise forced me to sleep with earplugs during my first 2 weeks here (I also slept on the floor, but that’s another story). It didn’t take very long for me to adapt to the late-night mating calls of Belltown natives, but I don’t think I’ll ever habituate to the motorcycles that plague my downtown existence. Instead of attempting a snobbishly droll rant on the subject, I’ll defer to the following aptly-titled Craigslist post: Dear Hellishly Loud Motorcycle & Boom Car Owners/Riders.
Noise pollution is one of the great drawbacks of our culture; it seems like few in my generation take the risk of hearing loss seriously. Concerts, Clubs, and Car Stereos are all needlessly loud; my only solace is that most of the ghetto-posturing teenagers and insecure motorcycle riders will be mostly deaf by 35.
Chop Suey, for instance, is an excellent music venue; they attract the elitist, critically acclaimed hip-hop and electronic groups I pretend to enjoy in order to gain hipster credibility. However, I end up avoiding their weekend shows because they turn the volume up to ridiculous levels (also, their ventilation is poor and they oversell the club). The worst example was the People Under the Stairs show earlier this year; all sound was obscured for a second after each bass hit due to rattling and distortion, making it was nearly impossible to make out the vocals.
Due to poor judgment as a young concert-goer, I have a mild case of Tinnitus; I have a permanent ringing sound in my ears, but I only notice when I’m in near silence (which occurs rarely, given my popular, jet-setting lifestyle). Even though it’s a mere annoyance, I wish I could go back and make my fourteen year-old self wear earplugs in order to prevent my tinnitus. (While I’m at it, I’d also tell him to get a haircut and buy Internet stock.)
In conclusion, this is old man Fortes telling all you young whippersnappers to wear your earplugs. And goddammit, turn it down! I’m trying to watch Matlock.
I’m leaving for Lake Chelan this evening to go tubing. We were going to camp, but the campground we reserved was evacuated today due to fires (Eastern Washington is arid and fire-prone). Chelan is incredibly popular during the summer, finding a campground was difficult; finding another campground on short notice is impossible since the evacuations have overflowed into all the campgrounds within a 50-mile radius.
We don’t want to lose the money paid for the boat, so we’re going anyway. We’ll likely end up at a hotel in Wenatchee (about an hour away); campfires are also prohibited, so camping wouldn’t be as much fun. I’m psyched about tubing though, it’s a blast.
The Company Picnic is on this weekend as well; I may go on Sunday, although I may skip. If I don’t make it, it will be the second time I miss the company picnic since 1998 (I missed the 2001 picnic because I was finishing school in Pittsburgh).
